Step-by-Step: S-XBEE Retrofit

HEAD UNIT


OVERVIEW: This document outlines the replacement of the XBee with the S-XBee on the Head Unit. 

EQUIPMENT NEEDED



  • #2 Phillips Screwdriver (not included)
  • S-XBee Retrofit Kit (included)
    • 8mm Wrench
    • Modem Mounting Plate
    • 4x #8 Star Washers
    • 4x #8-32 X 3/8 PPH Screws
    • S-XBee Assembly

REPLACE MODEM MOUNTING PLATE

PREPARE HEAD UNIT

  1. Open Head Unit and disconnect backup battery.
  2. Unplug power at the bottom of Head Unit.

CHANGE OUT MODEM MOUNTING PLATE

  1. Locate modem on bottom mounting plate.
  2. Unplug both ethernet cables from modem.
  3. Unplug the modem power connector and unscrew modem antenna.
  4. On the right side of the modem, unscrew the blue cable.
  5. Remove modem plate from slot rack.
  6. Unscrew black cable on right side of modem.
  7. Carefully remove modem.
  8. Remove 4 screws and lock washers, then remove old modem mounting plate.
  9. Set modem on top of new modem mounting plate as shown, sticker should face out when modem is re-installed in Head Unit.
  10. Attach modem with 4 screws and lock washers. NOTE: Extras are provided if necessary. 
  11. Carefully put modem back into the Head Unit without pinching any wires, reconnect black and blue wires on right side. NOTE: Sticker should face out and be visible when modem is in Head Unit.
  12. Reconnect modem antenna and modem power connector. 
  13. Carefully slot the back of the plate into the slot rack in the back of the box. NOTE: DO NOT force - minimal pressure is required to push plate into slot rack.
  14. Put the modem plate arm back onto the bottom hook of slot rack as shown.
  15. Plug the ethernet cables back into the modem. 
    1. The cable coming from inside the box uses the back connection
    2. The cable coming from the door uses the front connection.



REPLACE XBEE WITH S-XBEE

REMOVE XBEE

  1. Unplug the old XBee USB cable from the inner USB connection
  2. Use the 5//16” wrench to loosen the XBee antenna cable connection.
  3. Loosen the XBee retaining screw with the screwdriver.
  4. Remove the old XBee assembly.

INSTALL NEW S-XBEE

  1. Place the S-XBee in the same spot by fitting the bracket into the slot.
  2. Screw in the S-XBee bracket retaining screw with the screwdriver.
  3. Plug the USB cable into the inner USB connector as shown.
  4. Connect the XBee antenna cable onto the S-XBee antenna threads. Handtighten then secure the connector with a quarter turn of the 5/16” wrench. NOTE: Do not overtighten!
  5. The complete S-XBee assembly should match image below.

RESTORE HEAD UNIT POWER

  1. Reconnect backup battery.
  2. Carefully close the Head Unit door. NOTE: Make sure wires don’t get pinched!
  3. Plug in power at base of Head Unit.
